Japanese Occupation
During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, there were minimal clothing. The POWs did not wear much. They wore mainly shorts or long pants with belts and their bare chests showed how malnourished they were. Men had short hair. Young children however sometimes wore tops for the guys, including shorts or long pants. The girls wore plain tops with shorts or dresses. The young children also mainly walked around barefooted. Some of the older men wore tops and long pants or shorts with belts, also mostly with no shoes. The older women however, wore pretty and elegant tops with past-the-knee skirts and sandals. They kept their hair short too. Most females kept their hair short to trick the Japanese into thinking that they were men. This prevented them from getting raped by the Japanese.
