During the British Rule, life was simple and everyone was happy, despite being upset about certain things such as, always having to listen to the British. The British provided the people who lived in Singapore with sufficient necessities such as education and they also improved the lives of many by improving the trade system. I would like to emphasize on my previous statement, "life was simple and everyone was happy". During the British Rule, the British left everyone alone to do their own things. There were no soldiers that picked a fight or gave death threats to the people.
Japanese Occupation
During the Japanese Occupation, life was very difficult and death seemed to be better than living. People were being tormented, tortured and harassed. Everyone was living in fear. Japanese soldiers patrolled the streets with their guns and swords and struck fear in everyone's heart. One of the torture methods was, the Japanese soldiers would pump water in someone and they will continue pumping in the water till the stomach bursts or to the point that it looks like it's going to explode and they would jump up and down the the stomach. Not only that, they were also very biased. The Indians and Malays were treated better than the Chinese. They did not see the Indians and the Malays as much as a threat as the Chinese.
