The British colonial rule
Singapore was under the rule of the British before 1941 when the Japanese occupied Singapore. As Singapore was part of the British Empire then and had become a full Crown Colony , the locals were expected to celebrate the Queen's birthday. They followed the British culture and celebrated their festivals. The locals also celebrated Queen Victoria's jubilee in 1887. The celebration of the Queen's birthday was widely featured in newspapers.
The Japanese Occupation
During the Japanese Occupation in 1941, the locals in Singapore were made to adapt to the Japanese culture, habits and practices. Due to the embracing of the 'Japanisation' assimilation process, the locals in Singapore had to take up the Japanese calendar and celebrate their festivals and anniversaries corresponding to those being celebrated in Tokyo.
