During the British rule, schools in Singapore used different languages as their medium of instruction to teach the children. The Chinese, Malay and Indian communities set up their own schools and used their own mother tongue as a medium of instruction to teach them which were of poor quality. There were a few English schools that were run by Christian missionaries. Later, the Malay and Tamil language schools declined and prosperous Asian families sent their children to school in Britain.
